Stakeholders Demand Targeted Reforms to Bridge Rural Civic Education Gaps and Fight Electoral Misinformation

Ganta, Nimba County, Liberia -Tuesday, 20 October 2026

Deep-rooted language barriers, rising misinformation, and limited access to voting information across rural communities have prompted election stakeholders in Ganta to demand urgent, targeted reforms aimed at strengthening citizens’ participation in Liberia’s electoral process.

Community leaders together with civic actors formally adopted a comprehensive resolution on Tuesday, 20 October 2026, marking the successful close of a crucial two-day Civic and Voter Education regional consultation for Northern and Central Liberia.

Voices from grassroots organizations echoed emotional stories during discussions, highlighting how vulnerable citizens in distant villages often feel forgotten, confused, and disconnected when preparing to cast their votes.

Organized by National Elections Commission authorities alongside international partners, this historic gathering assembled eager delegates from six Electoral Magisterial Areas spanning Bong, Lofa, and Nimba counties.

Severe shortages of civic educators, inadequate funding, poor logistics, and fragmented field operations currently weaken public outreach, leaving millions without timely guidance before crucial polls.

Delegates expressed deep concern regarding marginalized youth, first-time voters, and persons living with disabilities, who frequently encounter insurmountable obstacles while attempting to exercise their constitutional franchise.

False rumors alongside deceptive narratives continue spreading rapidly across rural towns, creating genuine anxiety and threatening peaceful democratic participation among uninformed community members.

To heal these communication divides, grassroots representatives urged commission leaders to partner directly with local radio stations, traditional elders, trusted religious authorities, market women, and youth groups.

Commending these emotional contributions, Commissioner Floyd Oxley Sayor assured delegates that every recommendation will directly reshape upcoming national voter education strategies.

Standing in solid partnership, campaign officer Boima Metzger from UNDP Liberia reaffirmed steadfast support toward empowering electoral authorities and building inclusive democratic institutions.

Dedicated staff from NEC Civic and Voter Education Section within External Relations Department remain committed to driving this national journey toward transparent elections.

Supported generously by European Union partners, Sweden, and Ireland, this transformational consultation process moves next to Harper, Maryland County, bringing hope and civic awareness to South-Eastern citizens from 22 to 23 October 2026.
