For Immediate Release - NEC Headquarters, Monrovia, Liberia, 16 September 2026. The National Elections Commission of Liberia (NEC-Liberia) has announced the appointment of Atty. Joseph A. Yarsiah as the new Executive Director of the Commission.
Atty. Yarsiah is a Liberian with requisite experience, technical knowledge, and institutional leadership capabilities necessary for the effective discharge of the mandate of Executive Director, as provided for under the New Elections Law of Liberia.
In a Resolution issued by the NEC Board of Commissioners (BoC) on 15 September 2026, the Board announced Atty. Yarsiah's appointment following a comprehensive vetting process involving qualified candidates for the position.
The BoC determined that he emerged as the most qualified candidate for the position.
Accordingly, Section 2.19 of the New Elections Law of Liberia, as amended in 2014, authorizes the Board of Commissioners to appoint the Executive Director of the Commission.
The resolution states that the vote in favor of Atty. Yarsiah's appointment secured the required two-thirds majority of NEC Board members present and voting, thereby satisfying the applicable legal and procedural threshold for the appointment.
The Executive Director is vested with the powers and duties prescribed under the Commission's administrative policies and procedures and the New Elections Law of Liberia.
In accordance with the New Elections Law, the Executive Director shall:
- a) Serve as the chief administrative officer of the Commission;
- b) Oversee the day-to-day operations of all Commission departments and divisions; and
- c) Implement decisions and directives of the Board of Commissioners.
Meanwhile, the formal induction ceremony for the newly appointed Executive Director is scheduled to take place in early October 2026 at the NEC Headquarters in Monrovia.
