Your Rights as a Voter
The Constitution of Liberia and the New Elections Law guarantee fundamental rights to all citizens in relation to the electoral process. Understanding these rights empowers you to participate fully and hold the process accountable.
Right to Vote
Every Liberian citizen aged 18 and above has the right to vote in all elections. No person shall be denied this right on the basis of sex, religion, ethnicity, disability, or political opinion.
Right to a Secret Ballot
Your vote is secret and protected by law. No one — including election officials, party agents, or family members — has the right to see how you voted or pressure you to reveal your choice.
Right to Stand for Office
Every qualified citizen has the right to contest elections as a candidate, either through a political party or as an independent candidate, subject to meeting constitutional requirements.
Right to Information
You have the right to access information about the electoral process, candidates, political parties, and election results. NEC is committed to transparency and public disclosure.
Right to Complain
If you witness irregularities or believe your rights have been violated, you have the right to file a formal complaint with the NEC or through the courts.
Freedom from Intimidation
You have the right to participate in the electoral process free from violence, intimidation, coercion, or any form of harassment. All forms of electoral violence are criminal offenses.
