Benin Heads to the Polls as ECOWAS Observers Finalize Election Deployment
The people of Benin head to the polls today, Sunday, 12 April 2026, to cast their votes in the country’s presidential election. The Electoral Commission has approved two main candidate pairs: Romuald Wadagni, running alongside Mariam Chabi Talata (ruling coalition). Paul Hounkpè, running alongside Rock Judicaël Hounwanou (opposition FCBE). Ahead of the polls, the Deputy Director of Logistics at NEC Liberia, Edwin Y. Freeman, serving as part of the ECOWAS Election Observation Mission, on Saturday, 11 April 2026, led efforts to finalize and distribute deployment plans for both short-term and long-term observers engaged in field operations. Mr. Freeman is working alongside a team that includes election professionals from Ghana and Cape Verde, reflecting strong regional collaboration in support of electoral processes. According to Mr. Freeman, the team successfully identified and verified 27 polling stations across Cotonou, with support from the district police. This effort ensures smooth access and accurate location mapping ahead of election day. As part of ongoing engagements, the NEC logistics staff also met with Bomi County Senator, Edwin Melvin Snowe, Jr. who serves as Chairman of the ECOWAS Parliament Committee on Political Affairs, Peace, Security and the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM).
