The National Elections Commission and the Liberia National Police (LNP) have completed a joint training program on election security, funded through the UNDP-managed Liberia Electoral Support Project. The five-day training brought together 60 police officers and 20 NEC security coordinators at the Police Academy in Monrovia.
Training Focus Areas
- Election security planning and threat assessment
- Protection of polling places, tally centers, and warehouses
- Crowd management and de-escalation techniques
- Escort protocols for electoral materials in transit
- Communication and coordination between NEC and LNP
- Handling of electoral offenses and evidence preservation
The training incorporated lessons learned from the 2023 general elections, where security coordination was generally praised but some challenges were identified in rural areas. Participants developed county-specific security plans that will be refined as the 2029 election cycle progresses.
"Free and credible elections require a secure environment. This partnership between NEC and the LNP is essential to ensuring that every citizen can vote without fear or intimidation." — LNP Deputy Inspector General
Follow-up training sessions are planned for mid-2026, with expanded coverage to include regional police commanders in all 15 counties.
